Superintendent News
May 23, 2011Just wanted to give everyone a quick update on course conditions. Over all the course is starting to dry out nicely. This past weekend we missed most of the showers in the area and the wind really helped the drying process throughout the course. We still have a few problematic wet spots throughout the course which we will address during the next phase of renovation. The new drainage we have put in over the past few seasons is really paying dividends now with this incredibly wet weather pattern we are currently in.
Another draw back to the cool wet weather is the fairways, tees, and approaches really take a beating with all the earth worm activity. Those mud spots in the short grass are brought up to the surface by the worms moving up through the soil. Then as we cut the grass the rollers on the mowers flattens the dirt out on the grass surface and create a mud spot called a “worm casting”. This will improve over the course of the summer as the temperatures start to warm up and the weather turns more seasonable. The worms are actually good for natural aeration of the playing surface, just not for aesthetics and playability of the fairways. You won’t see the worm castings on the greens because the topdressing that we put down on them irritates the worms to the point that they move to other locations on the course to surface.
Lastly, I would like to congratulate all the winners from the Men’s one day Member Guest yesterday. It was great to see everyone out enjoying one of the few sunny days we have had so far this spring yesterday at the “Beek”. See you on the course!!
